Multivitamins for Frogs

Frog Formation Station
Lorren J. Kezmoh, 13, Pittsburgh, Pa.
Finalist, Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge, 2003

Project background: The decline in frog populations and the increasing numbers of frogs found with deformities concerns Lorren. She wanted to find a way to boost the immune systems of these creatures and see if tadpoles grow bigger and develop faster if given multivitamins.

Tactics and results: Lorren gave nine tadpoles multivitamins daily as they grew and turned into frogs. Compared to frogs in a control group, these frogs weighed 52 percent more and grew 66 percent longer.

V. Miller

Lorren established a frog pond in her backyard and got it certified by the National Wildlife Federation as a backyard wildlife habitat. She released the frogs into this pond and will continue to study them as bio-indicators of her backyard habitat.
