The Duplicate — William Sleator
Published by Penguin, 1999

The Duplicate is about a 16-year-old boy named David. After a big hurricane ravages the beach, tears trees out of the ground, and piles sand and seaweed on the shore, David decides to go looking for items that may have washed up on the beach. While he's looking, he finds a big metal box that reads, "Spee-Dee-Dupe." David has no idea what that means, but when he accidentally duplicates his fish, he soon finds out. David thinks his troubles have ended when he duplicates himself, but his troubles have really just begun. One duplicate goes crazy and tries to kill David after making a duplicate of himself. It's chaos from there on in.

I liked this book because there was a lot of action in it and it kept me guessing at every turn. I liked the main character David, because he was just an average boy who thought his life would be easy once he found the Spee-Dee-Dupe, but he was in for a big surprise. I liked it when David duplicated his fish, but my favorite part was at the end. If you're curious, you'll have to read the book to see what I mean.

I think the main idea the author shared was to not cheat to get through life. I learned that nothing in life is ever perfect, and you determine your own future.
