New Traditions

Making the Best of Space
Taking our traditions with us into space is part of making sure human beings will be happy living there. People need to feel connected to their homes and beliefs. But space itself is a different environment. Because of the conditions there, some traditions will need to be celebrated in new ways. Astronauts who have spent time in orbit describe how important it became to them to look out at Earth every day. In a sense, they've already started a new space-based tradition.
What else might become part of life in orbit? There are plans to build hotels in orbit. The designers of these hotels are trying to find ways to help guests have fun being weightless. There are also artists who hope to create unique, new forms of art in space. This is only the beginning.
Challenge: Adding a Little Space to the Holidays
The station manager of the orbiting space station has asked for ideas for a special "space-based" celebration. She's looking for decorations, activities, or any other way to add a special "space" touch to the celebrations brought from Earth.
Consider everything you know or have learned about living in orbit. Think again about your favorite part of December. (It can even be New Year's Eve!) Now, stretch your imagination and put these together. What could you suggest to the station manager that would add a new "space" touch to your celebrationsomething you couldn't do on Earth?
If you wish, send your suggestion to challenge@snkids.com. Please include your first name, age, city or town, and state. If you are under 13 years old, get your parent's permission to write to us. You may be eligible to win a prize!
