Maya Math

This is the Maya math system. The shell is used as a symbol for zero, a dot for one, and a bar for five. The Maya counted by twenties, as we count by tens. The number twenty is written as a dot with a shell (meaning zero) under it.

Twenty-one is a dot on top for twenty and a dot below for one.

Twenty times twenty is four hundred—write it with a dot above and two shells beneath.
