Sleep and Hyperactivity

Development of a Sleep Profile for 3rd and 4th Graders: The Impact of ADD/ADHD?
Mary Anne Messer, 14, Hattiesburg, Miss.
Finalist, Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge, 2004

Project background: Mary Anne became interested in the dreaming state of sleep. She met with the director of a university sleep laboratory who encouraged her to develop a basic background in sleep physiology.

Tactics and results: Mary Anne created a survey with 54 questions regarding sleep hygiene. She included questions about TV viewing and video game playing habits. She also included a question to identify children with ADD/ADHD. Parents of 124 children responded to the survey.

After analyzing her data, Mary Anne found that children with ADD/ADHD were less likely to stick to a bedtime routine, less likely to fall asleep within 20 minutes, and less likely to sleep soundly, among other differences. They were also more likely to watch TV immediately before going to bed.
