Alien Landscapes 9

When a spacecraft lands on a planet, an asteroid, or some other body, it can photograph and study only its immediate neighborhood. Such images and data provide scientists with clues about the place where the vehicle has landed. Sometimes, it's hard to figure out what an image shows. It's also hard to tell if the landing site is typical of the planet as a whole.
