Space Weather
Is the sun covered with spots? Are Earth's auroras dancing brightly today? As the sun gears up for its period of peak activity next year, it will unleash numerous solar storms toward Earth. Such outbursts can knock out power grids, cripple satellites, and alter radio-wave propagation in Earth's ionosphere. For the latest space weather reports, check out the Web site of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Environment Center in Boulder, Colo.
