Real-Life Monsters

When you think of science fiction movies (and stories), there's one kind that everyone knows about—the Monster Movie! (Yes, horror movies and stories have monsters too, but this isn't about them. Too scary for me. JCz.) From the Blob, Godzilla, and Megatron to the villainous foes of superheroes, monsters are everywhere!

And, they exist in real life. If you've been coming here for a while, you'll know that science fiction writers have a secret. We take our strangest ideas from real life. We look at the real world—and have a little fun with it.

To start off Monster Month right, it's your turn!

Challenge: Make Them Scary!

Here are some real-life monsters (to what they eat!) to use as a starting point for your science fiction version. Look up any names that aren't familiar to you. Feel free to use one of your own, as long as it lived on Earth at some point in time.

Alligator Angler fish Army ants Bird-eating spider
Cuckoo Gila monster Great white shark Grizzly bear
Hyena Leech Lionfish Locusts
Plesiosaur Python Skua Slime mold
Trapdoor spider Turtle Tyrannosaur

  1. Pick one or more real-life monsters from this list (or add your own.) To make a science fiction version, think about what makes the real animal scary. Then, think about what would make your monster even more scary and dangerous. Bigger teeth? The ability to fly? Intelligence? An appetite for students? Have fun with it.
  2. Draw your monster at its scariest!! Don't forget to give it a name!

Help fill our Monster Gallery!
