Cute Kittens

Two mothers and two daughters are oohing and aahing over the three adorable kittens in the pet shop window. The ladies buy the kittens, and each leaves the shop with her very own kitten. There were no other kittens in the shop, and no one has to share a kitten. How can three kittens be divided among two mothers and two daughters?

Adapted from Visual Brainstorms, a brainteaser game from ThinkFun (www.thinkfun.com).
